The Royal Thread: Purple’s Journey from Power to Poetry in Silk

by Helen Johnson 08 Jan 2026

Discover the regal history of purple in Silktopia’s illustrated silk scarves. Inspired by the Lotus Flower, rare Blue John Stone, and the Peacock Butterfly, each design celebrates heritage, artistry, and British botanical beauty.

From ancient civilisations to the great halls of European aristocracy, the colour purple has long whispered of power, luxury, and mystique. Once more valuable than gold, this elusive hue was reserved for the emperors of Rome, the bishops of Byzantium, and the monarchs of Renaissance Europe. Today, it still speaks in the same regal tongue — but at Silktopia, we allow it to say so much more.

Purple is not just a colour. It is a story, a scent of wild violets in a shaded woodland, the dusky twilight over British moorland, the shimmer of rare stone beneath Derbyshire soil. Our scarves are an homage to this noble shade and the layered meanings it carries — from earth to ether.

A Legacy Woven in Silk

The tradition of purple as a symbol of status began with the ancient Phoenicians, who extracted Tyrian purple dye from thousands of tiny sea snails. It was said that Cleopatra herself adored it; Queen Elizabeth I forbade anyone outside the royal family from wearing it.

Now, in our atelier nestled between the silk-spun towns of Macclesfield and Derby, we revive this majesty — but with a distinctly modern, feminine sensibility. Our Lotus Flower Silk Twill Scarf, Blue John Stone Scarf, and Peacock Butterfly designs all draw upon the heritage of purple, reimagined with botanical romance and the delicate confidence of silk.

Lotus Flower Silk Twill Scarf: A Bloom of Wisdom and Wonder

In the Lotus Flower scarf, rich plum and aubergine tones are interwoven with soft teals and ivory blooms. The lotus, a symbol of spiritual awakening and renewal, floats across the silk in graceful symmetry. Inspired by the still waters of ornamental gardens and temple pools, this design balances the sacred and the serene — an ode to contemplative beauty.

Like the royal purple of old, this scarf suggests elevation — not through hierarchy, but through inner calm, reflection, and artistry. It is perfect worn high on the neck for boldness or loose and flowing, whispering sophistication.

Blue John Stone: From Cavern to Couture

The Blue John Stone Silk Twill Scarf takes its name and soul from Derbyshire’s rarest mineral — a fluorite veined with mesmerising bands of violet, cream, and deepest midnight. Found only in the caverns of Castleton, this gemstone was once carved for Napoleon’s tableware and Queen Victoria’s ornaments.

Our design captures the otherworldly striations of the stone, rendered in geometric reverie. It is a meeting of nature and design — pattern echoing geology, silk echoing the cavern’s shadows. Draped over the shoulders or knotted at the throat, it evokes both raw British landscape and meticulous craftsmanship.

Peacock Butterfly: A Flutter of Jewel-Toned Joy

The Peacock Butterfly scarf draws inspiration from one of Britain’s most beloved winged visitors. With its vibrant “eyes” and warm purples, this butterfly is a carnival of camouflage and flair — nature’s answer to regal attire.

Set against a palette of sunset purples, berry pinks, and tangerine accents, the scarf is a dance of high summer and joyful elegance. It flutters between whimsy and sophistication — a statement of life lived vividly.

Purple Reimagined: More Than Just Royal

At Silktopia, we see purple not only as an echo of regal legacy, but as a canvas of mood and imagination. It is the velvet hush of dusk, the mineral shimmer of stone, the delicate touch of a butterfly’s wing, the opening of a lotus bloom. It is quiet confidence. Feminine power. Botanical splendour.

To wear one of our purple-hued scarves is to step into a story — one woven with artistry, heritage, and the spirit of the British Isles.
